CBSE asks schools to push Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya programmeSeptember 26, 2014
In line with the Centre's Swachh Bharat campaign, the Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry launched an initiative on Thursday for clean schools. Being called the 'Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya' (SBSV) campaign, it will continue till October 31.
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) wrote to all affiliated schools that they must try and take part in this campaign to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. The board's director Sadhana Parashar wrote that Gandhi always said 'cleanliness is next to godliness' and that is why the Centre decided to launch their campaign from October 2.
However, school started early for the HRD ministry which kicked off its campaign from New Delhi on Thursday itself. Parashar wrote that CBSE schools may participate in SBSV by taking up a programme for cleanliness during this period. Students, teachers, parents, along with school management committees would be encouraged to participate in this programme.
According to CBSE, some initiatives that can be taken up by schools include cleaning of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, any statue installed on campus, cleaning of toilets and drinking water areas. Cleaning activities may also extend to kitchen sheds, stores, playgrounds and maintenance of school gardens.
Schools can also organize competitions of essay, painting, debates, songs, skits, street play etc. on cleanliness and hygiene. The central board has suggested the entire campaign be supervised by constituting a children's cabinet which will help monitor the drive.
Other related activities which schools have been advised to take up are talks by children during school assembly on a daily basis on different aspects of cleanliness. The board has requested that these talks try to focus on Gandhi's sayings and teachings on cleanliness and hygiene.
The board has also sent some songs along with audio links on their website. Lyrics have been separately posted online in PDF format.
Further, the board has encouraged schools to fill their sanitation status online at www.schoolsanitation.com which is an award winning activity. Schools with good sanitation ratings (after verification) will be felicitated as per their ratings. The highest scoring schools with green rating will get a cash award of 1,00,000, if the rating is blue the school will get a cash award of 75,000, and if yellow the school will get 25,000, however if they are black or red, they need to improve.
